Editorial: Learn from Wando Bridge closure chaos
If Monday afternoon and Tuesday were any indication, traffic will be disastrous in most of Mount Pleasant. The gridlock caused by the closing of the westbound portion of the James B. Edwards Bridge over the Wando River could last for weeks, depending on how long it takes state officials to repair the problem.
But there are a few lessons to be learned from this traffic nightmare.
For one thing, the state Department of Transportation needs to start considering long-term fixes to the Wando River bridge. The bridge has had structural problems since it opened almost three decades ago, leading to partial closings on multiple occasions.
