Gaillard Center announces Charleston Gaillard Education Initiative Inaugural Student Art Installation
In order to promote the arts in daily curriculum, Heather Teems, Art Director at Murray LaSaine and MC Hursey Elementary created a program around the text and illustrations in the book.
To embrace the story of My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett at M.C. Hursey Elementary and Murray LaSaine Elementary, we have fully infused the arts with our book study. Teaching literature through the arts enables the children to have a much broader vision and more thorough understanding. Not to mention, it’s way more fun! The lower elementary multiage class (grades 1-3 working at their own level and pace) were read the book during their read-aloud times in their regular homeroom class, and in collaboration with their art class. The upper elementary classes (grades 4-6 working at own level and pace) were assigned the books to read on their own.
