The Charleston area bus system is adding a feature to promote safe pedestrian and cycling access across the Ashley River’s North Bridge which has seen several fatalities in recent years.
Beginning Oct. 3, the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority will provide free transportation between bus stops on either side of the bridge, formally known as the World War II Memorial Bridge, for both cyclists and pedestrians commuting between North Charleston and West Ashley.
In the event that bicycle racks are full, the change allows bicycles to be brought on board the bus between stops.
