Lowcountry Digital Equity Coalition Partners with Palmetto Goodwill to Provide Refurbished Laptops to Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester County Title 1 Students
(North Charleston, SC) – Lowcountry Digital Equity Coalition (LDEC), in partnership with Palmetto Goodwill, is kicking off a summer-long Lowcountry Computer Donation Project to provide 2000 laptops to K-12 students in Title 1 schools in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties by the start of the 2024-2025 School Year.
Aaron Jones, Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative (TCCC) CEO, stated, “This initiative embodies TCCC’s original intent when establishing LDEC during the COVID pandemic. It is tapping into the power of collective impact by bringing Lowcountry organizations together for the betterment of society.”
Local businesses, governments, and other organizations in the tri-county area are encouraged to contribute their surplus laptops to the LDEC coalition from June 18 to August 30. These donated laptops will be refurbished by employees of Palmetto Goodwill’s Power Up Computer Donation program. Companies interested in donating can find the simple donation process on the LDEC website at Computer Laptop Donation Project (www.lowcountrydec.com). For convenience, pick-up services are available directly from the donor’s location.
LDEC has spearheaded regional efforts to ensure broadband access for all residents in the tri-county area. The project’s objective aligns with South Carolina’s Digital Equity Plan, which aims to make desktop or laptop computers available to every South Carolina resident, either at home or in an easily accessible location.
Natalie Hauff, LDEC Executive Committee Chair and Charleston County Public Library Deputy Director, stated, “This project brings us closer to our vision of creating a region where everyone has equal access to digital resources, skills, and opportunities, enabling them to succeed in the digital era. We are grateful for the collaboration with the Lowcountry business community, One Region, and the financial support from Comcast.”
